Middle School English Teacher writes… Every student shoud be required to listen to this book

Standard
Every student should be required to listen to this book.
Gabrielle Ford’s inspirational story begins when, during middle school, she is diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia, a rare degenerative muscle disease. Ataxia caused her to frequently stumble, wobble as if she had been drinking, and slur her words. Eventually she needed a wheelchair. Because of the disease’s symptoms, Gabe was bullied throughout middle and high school. Students would mock, tease, and even punch her. It is heartbreaking to learn how she was abused.
It took a long-eared coonhound named Izzy, who curiously suffered from a similar condition, to lift Gabe out of a deep depression caused by the incessant abuse. Much like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, Gabe has become an internationally renowned speaker and anti-bullying advocate. Her story has been shared during a myriad of school assemblies, conferences and conventions, on the Today Show, and in the pages of Cosmopolitan Magazine. It is the most requested episode in the history of Animal Planet.
Narrator Susan Bennett’s comforting and pleasant voice adds another level of authenticity to Gabe’s story. The seasoned narrator’s clear and kind voice gently relays the importance of the story and is compassionate to both Gabe and the listener. She is a skilled voice artist. (Many people will recognize her as the voice of Apple’s Siri.) Bennett’s talents are a perfect addition to such a difficult yet encouraging biography.
Sidebars dot the story. Information on how to identify bullying, fight back when bullied, stand up for someone who is bullied, and help someone who is a victim of bullying is included in the narrative. Countless letters from students who have attended her school assemblies and are thankful for her bravery are also shared.
Gabe’s desire is to break the cycle of bullying. Listening to her story will help.  Lisa Arnold.

Lisa Arnold spends her days teaching English to middle school students, her evenings working as a library clerk, and her nights reading under the covers. (www.gabenizzy.@yahoo.com) http://www.gabeandizzy.com

Bullying of Students with Disabilities

Bullying of Students with Disabilities Addressed in Guidance to America’s Schools
The National Ataxia Foundation is pleased that the U.S. Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is taking a strong stand against bullying of students with disabilities. On October 24 a guidance, in the form of a letter, was issued to educators detailing public schools’ responsibilities under the Americans with Dis- abilities Act. The purpose of the guidance is to remind school administrators and teachers that bullying is wrong and must not be tolerated – including against students with disabilities. If a student with a disability is being bullied, federal law requires schools to take immediate and appropriate action to investigate the issue and, as necessary, take steps to stop the bullying and prevent it from recurring.
At this link you will find a fact sheet for par- ents on schools’ obligations under federal law to address bullying: http://www2.ed.gov/about/ offices/list/ocr/docs/dcl-factsheet-bullying- 201410.pdf. Another resource is the federal Web site, http://www.stopbullying.gov, which provides useful information on bullying prevention and reme- dies. NAF applauds all efforts to eliminate any type of bullying in public schools.
Gabrielle Ford’s incredible journey of triumph over tragedy is filled with amazing coincidences. As a child, Gabrielle loved dance and dreamed of becoming a prima ballerina. That dream was shattered by a rare genetic neuromuscular disease,
Friedreich Ataxia, that would eventually place her in a wheelchair. Gabe endured constant and cruel bullying from classmates which took her on a path of depression and isolation. That all changed when Izzy, a long-eared coonhound pup, entered Gabe’s life. Izzy became Gabe’s best friend and constant companion. When this spe- cial friend mysteriously developed a condition mirroring Gabe’s, Gabe re-entered the world to get Izzy the best treatment available. Gabe found her way back to the stage as an outspoken advo- cate against school bullying. Speaking out for the voiceless, Izzy gave her the courage to speak out for another voiceless group: the thousands of children bullied in American schools every day. Gabe had the following to say regarding bullying:
“No one person is the same; you have the right to be different, your own person, but no one has the right to make fun of you. Ataxia was not a choice I made, but how people treat each other is. Ataxia wasn’t a choice I made, muscle disease was not a choice my dog Izzy made, but bullying is a choice. Who do you want to be?”
Gabrielle’s future plans include leading the dogs on a float as America’s Voice for the Bullied in the Orlando Christmas Parade 2014. She will also be featured on the cover of the November/ December “Dream Teen” magazine and in May 2015 she will be the keynote speaker at the UAW Woman’s Conference in MI. v

Gabe & Izzy …comment from student:

Hi Gabe,

I just recently finished your book, standing up for America’s bullied. I would absolutely LOVE for you to come to my school. A lot of the “different” kids in my grade are bullied. I told my teacher about one kid getting bullied, and it is still happening. I think that it would make a huge impact on not just my grade, but my entire school if you came to speak. I love your confidence about everything and you are my number one idol.

Thanks for being a great leader for me to look up to!

Abigail
